Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of California, 140 S. Ct. 1891 (2020):

This case centered around the decision by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The Regents of the University of California sued DHS, arguing that the decision to rescind was arbitrary and capricious in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).

The Supreme Court ultimately held in favor of the Regents of the University of California, finding that DHS had failed to provide a proper explanation for its decision to rescind the DACA program. The Court found that DHS had failed to properly analyze all relevant factors associated with ending the program and remanded the case back to DHS for further consideration.

The Court’s ruling was significant in that it clarified the legal requirements for government agencies when making decisions that affect the public. The ruling established that agencies must provide a thorough explanation for their decisions in order to remain in compliance with the APA. The case was a landmark ruling in the area of administrative law and has been heavily cited in subsequent cases.
